Botanische naam: Mentha piperita of Mentha x piperita
Andere namen: Munt of Mint
Familie: Labiatae, Lipbloemigen, 

De plant is een kruising van watermunt (Mentha aquatica) en groene munt (Mentha spicata) en kent veel variëteiten. Ergens las ik dat er wel tussen de 2000 en 3000 soorten zijn.

Pepermunt (Mentha piperita) is een zich snel verbreidende meerjarige winterharde plant. Pepermunt bloeit van juli t/m september met kleine violette bloempjes. De bladeren zijn mint groen en staan kruisgewijs tegenover elkaar op de stengel. De bladeren zijn langwerpig, eivormig en gezaagd en hebben een opvallende mentholgeur.

Plaats.
De plant groeit het beste in gedeeltelijke schaduw of in de volle zon.
Grond.
Munt groeit het best op vochtige, goed gedraineerde, alkalische grond met veel voedingsstoffen.
Vermeerderen.
Neem wortel of stengel stekken of verdeel munt, in voor- of najaar. ‘s Zomers de wortelstekken in water zetten. Zaai pepermunt in de lente.
Kweken.
Uitdunnen of verplanten op 30 cm afstand, in grote potten of plastic zakken om uitlopen van de wortels te beperken. Verwijder alle bloeiende stelen om kruisbestuiving tussen de verschillende soorten te voorkomen. Munt kan ook binnenshuis worden gekweekt

 

Kweek Pepermunt (of Herfstmunt) vlak bij rozen om bladluis te bestrijden.
Strooi verse of gedroogde bladeren rondom voedsel om muizen weg te houden. Wrijf (Herfstmunt) op een nieuwe bijenkorf om bijen aan te trekken. Gebruik badolie om tabaksreuk te verdrijven.
Strooi (Polei) in kasten en bedden om mieren en vlooien te verdrijven.

 Gebruik een sterk afkooksel (Herfstmunt) om kloven in handen te genezen. Toevoegen aan badwater voor een opwekend en verfrissend bad.

Muntbladeren. Van links naar rechts; pepermunt, Eau de Cologne munt (M. citrata ), Japanse akkermunt (M. arvensis var. piperascens , of var. japonica ), hertsmunt (M. longifolia ), Marokkaanse groene munt (M. spicata ), witte munt (M. suaveolens ) en Carinthiaanse munt (M. carinthiaca = M. arvensis  x M. suaveolens).
